The Edison Middle School Bands are made up of three groups:
Beginning Band (5th Hour)
Beginning Band is for 6th through 8th grade students who have no experience with a band instrument. In this class, students will learn the basics of music and rhythm, and pick their first instrument from the following: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, or Tuba. Percussion (drums) is NOT offered in 5th hour band class.
Intermediate Band (4th Hour)
Intermediate Band is for 6th through 8th grade students who have had at least one year experience with their band instrument. In this class, students will learn more complex concepts of music and rhythm, as well as get the chance to step up to a new color instrument, should they show the aptitude for this. Intermediate Band combines with the Advanced Band for all concerts and competitions.
Advanced Band (2nd Hour)
Advanced Band is for 7th through 8th grade students who have had at least two years experience with their band instrument. In this class, students will learn advanced concepts of music and rhythm, as well as preparing them for high school level repertoire. Advanced Band combines with the Intermediate Band for all concerts and competitoins. Students in this class have the opportunity to become “Band Aids” and help out the high school Marching Band.
Explore Percussion/Color Guard (7th Hour)
Explore class is a semester long and allows students the opportunity to take beginning percussion and color guard. Percussion students will learn how to read rhythms and how to hold sticks and mallets. They will be taught proper classical percussion technique on snare drum, mallet instruments, timpani, and auxiliary percussion. Students who wish to audition for the drum line for intermediate, advanced, or high school band, must have taken this course to qualify for an audition slot. Percussion students will be required to perform at the band concerts at the end of their corresponding semester.
